Ama Tsospas – Women’s Groups

Ama Tsospas support each other and the families.

Family
Polyandry has been practised for centuries. A woman marries the eldest son of the family and his younger brother. Polygamy is sometimes practised if the woman has no children or has a lot of housework. Then the husband can take a second wife. This is often the first wife’s younger sister.

Magpa marriage: If a couple only have daughters, a husband will be ‘married into’ the household.

Today, most marriages are monogamous. In the villages, the astrologers will choose the bride or groom, but modern young people like to find their own partner.

Trans Singela Area
Many women in this region have numerous children. There is no birthcontrol and no midwifes. The women support and advise each other when giving birth and when there is illness in the family. Often the women are malnourished.
In the last few years there have been fewer stillbirths thanks to better hygiene.

In 2010, pregnancy and birth were talked about in public for the first time. The Ama Tsospas asked Kathi Roth for support. There is hardly any money in the villages and they wanted to become more active. They asked for sewing machines.

All the villages have received sewing machines and Ladakh Partners would like to make it possible for the women to set up sewing rooms.

In the future, Kathi Roth will work with the women to define their goals and support them in a meaningful way.
We look forward to donations for the Ama Tsospas.
