What we do

The goal of our project is to support the region in the medical area, always considering its cultural circumstances. Therefore it was important to get to know and understand the local situation and people. At the same time it was important to make an objective judgment of the living conditions.

Käthi Roth has had a personal contact with the region for several years and has used the first few years to get to know the local culture very thoroughly. Her first attempt was to find out the main reasons behind locals getting sick and dying. That was a difficult undertaking as the population didn't always know the reasons themselves. However, it became clear to Käthi that the difficult climatic and geological conditions with all its consequences led to a life expectancy far below the one of the western world.

Goals of Ladakhpartners’ projects:

• Continue to motivate and support the amchis to practise their medicine
• Improve the hygiene and health of the local people
• help the people to help themselves and not make them dependent
• Encourage education and exchange, pass on what is learned
• Awareness of human rights. For example, some Amchis don’t receive a salary from the government
